But if you’ve always loved the idea of getting married in September, October or November and worried that an autumn wedding has to come with a very particular look, we’re here to tell you otherwise. Autumn is a season, not a theme, and we think it’s one of the best times of year to make a wedding feel completely your own.

You Don’t Have to Use Autumn Colours

There’s no rule that says an October wedding needs an orange, red and brown colour palette. Soft pinks look beautiful in autumn, as do crisp whites, monochrome, deep burgundy, butter yellow or completely neutral schemes.

Choosing colours that aren’t traditionally associated with the season can actually make them feel even more striking. Take inspiration from the time of year if you want to, or ignore it completely if you don’t. Your wedding styling should feel like you, not simply reflect the month you’ve chosen to get married.

Autumn Weddings Aren’t Automatically Rustic

Somewhere along the way, autumn weddings became synonymous with rustic weddings, but candlelight doesn’t have to mean country.

Earlier sunsets mean candlelight actually gets its moment, festoon lights glow across the courtyard and your evening reception starts to feel atmospheric before you’ve even finished dinner. By the time the music starts, everyone is already together with a drink in hand and nobody is checking the weather app.

You Can Still Have an Outdoor Wedding

An autumn wedding doesn’t mean giving up on being outside. Those crisp, bright autumn days can be some of the loveliest of the year, and our courtyard really comes into its own when there’s a slight chill in the air.

Guests can head outside for drinks and photographs, or get a little fresh air between songs before heading back into the warmth. And if the weather doesn’t play ball, you’ve chosen a wedding venue where the whole day doesn’t depend on it. That’s something we’d recommend thinking about whatever season you choose.

Your Flowers Don’t Have to Look ‘Autumnal’ Either

Seasonal wedding flowers can be incredible at this time of year, but you don’t have to lean into an obvious autumn aesthetic. Wild, colourful arrangements can look amazing against an autumn backdrop, as can sculptural whites, soft romantic florals or something much moodier.

Sometimes it’s the contrast that makes it work. Choose flowers because you love them, not because Pinterest told you what an October wedding is supposed to look like.

There Is Something About an Autumn Party

Maybe it’s because summer is over, maybe it’s the darker nights or maybe everyone is just very ready for a good night out. Whatever it is, autumn weddings have a particular energy once the evening gets going.

The doors close, the candles are lit, the music goes up and suddenly that cosy autumn wedding you planned has turned into a very serious party. We’re big fans of both.

The Best Autumn Wedding Is the One That Doesn’t Try Too Hard to Be One

That’s probably our biggest piece of autumn wedding planning advice: you don’t need to make the season the theme.

Use the bits you love- the light, the atmosphere, the cooler air, the candles and the excuse for an incredible evening- and leave everything else behind. An October wedding doesn’t need pumpkins to tell everyone it’s October. It just needs to feel like yours.
